How Transcendental Meditation Can Protect Our Hearts

What is Transcendental Meditation?

Transcendental Meditation (TM) is an ancient technique rooted in the Vedic approach to health. It is a simple mental procedure practised for 15 minutes twice a day while sitting comfortably with closed eyes. Unlike some other forms of meditation, TM does not require changes in personal beliefs or philosophy, nor does it require mental effort to intentionally alter physiological processes like your respiration rate or muscle relaxation.

Instead, the practice allows the ordinary thinking process to become quiescent, resulting in a distinctive state of psychophysiological restful alertness — a state that is wakeful yet deeply restful.

The study: TM in the classroom

To investigate whether TM could reduce cardiovascular reactivity in high-risk youth, researchers conducted a clinical trial involving 35 adolescents. All of these students had resting systolic blood pressure between the 85th and 95th percentile for their age and gender, classifying them as having high-normal blood pressure.

The students were randomly assigned to either a Transcendental Meditation group or a health education control group for a period of two months. The TM group practised their 15-minute meditation twice a day, which included a daily session at school during their lunch break and a prescribed session at home. Meanwhile, the control group participated in weekly lifestyle education sessions focusing on National Institutes of Health guidelines for diet, weight loss, and physical activity to provide comparable time and attention.

Testing the stress response

To see how well the students handled acute stress, the researchers put them through two fascinating laboratory challenges before and after the two-month intervention.

The car driving simulation — the first stressor was an engaging virtual reality car driving simulation. Wearing a virtual immersion monitor, the teens were challenged to drive as fast as possible, increasing their sympathetic arousal.

The social stressor interview — the second challenge was an interpersonal interview where the subjects had to discuss a recent socially stressful event involving family, friends, or school that had caused them anger or frustration.

During these stressors, researchers carefully monitored the students' cardiovascular reactivity, calculating their heart rate, blood pressure, and cardiac output.

The healing results

After just two months, the physiological benefits of the TM program were remarkably clear. The teenagers in the TM group exhibited significantly greater decreases in their resting systolic blood pressure from pre- to post-intervention compared to the control group.

Even more impressively, the TM group showed a much healthier cardiovascular response under pressure. During the highly stimulating car driving stressor, the TM group exhibited significantly greater decreases in systolic blood pressure, heart rate, and cardiac output reactivity. They also showed a greater decrease in systolic blood pressure reactivity during the emotional social stressor interview.

Interestingly, during the car driving simulation at the end of the study, the TM group actually achieved a higher maximum driving speed than the control group — suggesting that their calmer state may have also improved their perceptual-motor coordination and reaction times.

A lifelong impact

Previous studies have demonstrated that Transcendental Meditation can lower blood pressure in hypertensive adults. However, this study broke new ground by demonstrating that a behavioural stress reduction program like TM can significantly improve cardiovascular functioning at rest and during acute stress in at-risk adolescents.

Because an exaggerated cardiovascular response to stress is a strong predictor of future heart disease, reducing this reactivity early in life is absolutely critical. The successful implementation of TM during school lunch breaks highlights the enormous potential of school-based stress reduction programs. By teaching our youth how to tap into a state of restful alertness, we might just possess a powerful, accessible tool to prevent the early onset of hypertension and protect their hearts for a lifetime.
